Around The World In Commerce No. 327

Dear Readers,

Firstly, to those who celebrate Labor Day, - hope you are having a good long weekend!

The three things on my mind this week:

  1. I cannot remember when I last saw so many pixels and characters spent on a topic. The end of the de minimis exemption will reduce cross-border shopping but benefit sectors such as resale/recommerce or off-price retail. The biggest losers are Etsy and eBay. It will also lead to less selection and longer waiting times for goods. Will this lead to fewer parcels and more shipping containers? Temu and Shwin have likely shifted their focus to Europe.
  2. I listened to the earnings calls for Alibaba, JD.com, and Meituan, and the quick commerce sector in China has taken significant profits away from all of the platforms. Alibaba's Cloud division and its decision to create a chip to rival NVIDIA in China will likely yield significant capital versus other marketplaces that have no cloud businesses.
  3. Why do writers compare apples to oranges? This week's example, comparing Anker, an Amazon native brand from China, to Pattern, a reseller camouflaged as an agency/marketplace accelerator from the US. One is a publicly traded company in China, and the other is considering an IPO, which reminds me more and more of Pharmapacks and Kaspien/etailz. F1F534
